My current work is derived from painting on site in Nova Scotia. I work on small panels outdoors, and compose larger, invented images in the studio. I've always been excited by the scale changes of structures and buildings as one moves through open space. In many of these images I try to carry the viewers eye through a painting as one might navigate actual space. The larger paintings are constructed places where multiple points of view or perspectives are collaged together. The surface design, color and flatness of the canvas is more important to me than depicting a specific scene or realistic detail. By simplifying and reducing the forms and colors, I can explore representation while keeping the underlying abstract qualities alive.
